
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, Daniel Oren approached music by studying voice, piano and cello from an early age. At the age of 13, his musical talent was recognised internationally: he was chosen by Leonard Bernstein to sing the solo of Chichester Psalms on live Israeli television (1968). At the age of 17, Daniel Oren embarked on a career as a conductor at the Hochschüle in Berlin, where he won first prize in the ‘Herbert Von Karajan’ International Conducting Competition in 1975. In 1978, he made his debut in the United States at the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, while at the same time embarking on a career in Italy, where he was appointed music director of the Teatro Dell’Opera in Rome in 1978. Still in Italy, he also served as music director at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste, the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, and the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. He is guest conductor of the most important theatres and foundations in Europe, Asia, America. Others include the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Covent Garden in London, the Vienna State Opera, the Teatro alla Scala, and major opera houses in San Francisco, Houston, Buenos Aires, Paris, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, the Berliner Philarmoniker, the Israel Philharmonic, the Munich Radio Philharmonic, the Budapest Festival Orchestra and many others. He has worked with some of the most famous opera singers, including Alfredo Kraus, José Carreras, Pavarotti, Domingo, Raina Kabaivanska, Gena Dimitrova, Renato Bruson, Marcelo Alvarez, Leo Nucci, Anna Netrebko, Diana Damrau, and many more. He has made recordings for RCA, Decca, Arthaus Musik, TDK, and other famous labels. Among them is a live recording of Tosca at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, starring Luciano Pavarotti and Raina Kabaivanska, which was also repeated in Vienna and Turin. Daniel Oren is globally acclaimed by audiences especially for his unique interpretations of Verdi’s and Puccini’s masterpieces. His latest recording successes include ‘La Traviata’, recorded for the Pentatone label, conducting the Dresdner Philharmonic. In addition to numerous excellent reviews, the recording received the ‘Best Album of the Year’ award from NativeDSD Music in 2022. In 2024, he was awarded the prestigious Premio Abbiati in the category of “Best Production of the year” for conducting a new production of La Juive by F. Halévy at the Teatro Regio in Turin, with the stage direction by Stefano Poda. He held the position of Music Director at the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, later becoming Senior Conductor. In 2019 he is appointed Music Director of the Arena di Verona opera festival, where he recently celebrated his 40 years of continuous collaborations, becoming the conductor with the most appearances in the history of this prestigious festival since 1913. Since 2007, he has been Artistic Director of the Giuseppe Verdi Opera House in Salerno, where he has always aimed at the best quality for the Opera and Symphonic seasons. Also in Salerno in 2022 he held his first conducting masterclass, enjoying great success and discovering a strong desire to pass on the art of conducting to the younger generations.
